Legend says that the spiky protrusions of ripened pomegranates were the inspiration for the crowns of ancient kings. So before you sit down to watch this film, grab yourself a pomegranate and put it on your head and prepapre to enjoy a hypnagogic voyage into the mysteries of ancient kingdoms.
 2. Scott Walker: 30th Century Man Dir. Stephen Kijak, 2006 (Scott Walker, Brian Eno, David Bowie, Sting)
An enlightening documentary about the right way to build a successful and long-lasting career as an artist. Watching it I have to wonder if Scott was able to became a man of genius because of his habit of constantly wearing sunglasses?

Clik here to view.3. Lost Highway Dir. David Lynch, 1997 (Bill Pullman, Patricia Arquette, Balthazar Getty)
David Lynch performs surgery on the human unconscious. That’s all I have to say, for now.

Clik here to view.4. That Obscure Object of Desire Dir. Louis Bunuel, 1977 (Fernando Rey, Carole Bouquet, Ángela Molina)
Luis Bunuel’s caustic melodrama plays out like a deranged sketch comedy about the complex relationships of the bourgeoisie. A word of warning: don‚Äôt try to interpret the image of the gypsy mother carrying a pig – it‚Äôs a trap!

The character of Luper is a potential persona non grata for easyjet airlines, as his suitcases contain our recent history. I am enchanted by this movie in the same way I would be if you sat a labrador puppy in front of me.

Clik here to view.6. Funny Games Dir. Michael Haneke, 2007 (Naomi Watts, Tim Roth, Michael Pitt)
Haneke’s American remake of his own movie is great for showing to friends who have, perhaps, let you down in some way and need to be reminded that there are always consequences.

Clik here to view.7. Alice Dir. Jan Švankmajer, 1988 (Kristýna Kohoutová, Camilla Power)
At school, I was once given a bad mark for a handmade apron. But after seeing this movie, my stitching doesn’t seem so dreadful after all. Alice is, in my opinion, the most impressive movie adaptation of Lewis Carroll‚Äôs classic children’s tale.

Clik here to view.8. Stalker Dir. Andrei Tarkovsky, 1979 (Alisa Freyndlikh, Aleksandr Kaydanovskiy, Anatoliy Solonitsyn)
The mystery of this movie will hypnotise you into staring intensely at the screen whilst nothing much happens. You’ll either fall asleep or be transported to a state of long-term ecstasy. Legally!
9. The Limits of Control Dir. Jim Jarmusch, 2009 (Isaach De Bankolé, Alex Descas, Jean-François Stévenin)
Jarmusch’s stylish hitman drama is actually a study of the conspiracy of the arts against objectivity. To get the most from this film, invite your favourite friend-philosopher and stock up on strong drinks.

10. It’s My Life Dir. Jean-Luc Godard, 1962 (Anna Karina, Sady Rebbot, André S. Labarthe)
The more we talk, the less we are understood by others – but when Nana starts to philosophise, I want to join her table and talk for hours.
